Organic Mattress Pad

Buying something organic has gone beyond personal choice into something of a shared global responsibility. The benefits of organic living is much more than what is received by the end user; it is more or less like a seed whose harvest can be reaped many years after its first sowing. In short the benefits are far reaching, improving lives, livelihoods, industries and safeguarding the Earth for future generations.

Mattress pads are thin slices of cushiony material laid out on top of a bed mattress and below the bed sheet for added comfort or as a barrier that protects the mattress below from liquid spills. The mattress pad is usually used for a bed that is already worn out and requires some cushioning to increase comfort.
The organic mattress pad is made up of organic cotton, organic wool and organic rubber latex, depending on its function. The earliest producer of organic cotton was the SEKEM organization of Egypt.

Currently, the biggest producers are Turkey, India and China. An organic Mattress pad made of organic cotton is naturally hypoallergenic because it is one hundred percent free of synthetics and chemicals. This organic mattress pad lasts longer than non organic ones and also absorbs moisture readily, improving comfort while sleeping.
Organic wool is known for its durability, the largest producers currently being New Zealand and Australia. An organic mattress pad made up of organic wool is naturally resistant to bed bugs, dust mites and mold. It also regulates temperature, keeping the body cool during hot seasons and warm during the cold seasons. Organic wool, like organic cotton, allows the skin to breathe by absorbing moisture during the night and releasing it during the day.

Both the cotton and wool organic mattress pad, besides serving its basic function of providing comfort also protects you from the negative effects of your non-organic mattress base by acting as a protective barrier.

Some mattress pads are designed to protect the bottom layer from absorbing liquids and they are usually used for infants or individuals with urinary incontinence. An organic mattress pad made out of natural latex and covered with organic cotton is more breathable and comfortable to sleep on. Natural latex the most naturally cushioning durable material around; they are also hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant and comes in three different grades of firmness - medium, firm and extra firm.

Most retailers have noticed a boom in sales of the organic mattress pad. This is thanks to all the research and publications of how bad a traditional mattress really is to your health – it contains the chemicals of one barrel of oil.

The organic mattress it seems is here to stay.
